I am going to get a better exhaust for my 1978 C210 Skyline (L24) Fully Stock

I have the following options:

1. Extractors, 2.25" piping to lukey sports muffler to 2.5" turn-down tip - $970 all supplied and fitted at 1 shop

2. Buy extractors from another place ($440), install myself + $60 Engine Gasket = $500 then take to another shop to do 2.25" piping to sports muffler to 2.5" turn-down tip - $430 = $930

3. 2.25" piping to lukey sports muffler to 2.5" turn-down tip straight off existing engine manifold $400

If I choose option two, there is the chance that the manifold bolts could snap as they haven't been touched in 32 years, is the risk worth it?

What would you recommend for me?

I have also posted on SAU.

I wouldn't take the risk just to save 40 bucks man. Get it all done at the one shop, much easier and not that much more expensive.

Also, rule out option 3. Extractors are win. I love how my car sounds, i'm actually a little bit sad to be losing my extractors in the engine conversion :(

Strap a super charger to it, keep the extractors :P

Superchargers are gay, no where near as much fun as turbochargers :)

Supercharger would screw my engine over badly, wouldn't it be a parasite to power?

Nah you could easily bolt on a Toyota supercharger running 5-7psi and be fine, but there is no point. You would see maybe 50hp gains, noticeable but not worth it for the amount of money you would spend

In light of more information I have added a 4th option

Extractors to existing 1.75" pipe, (remove existing resonator) to lukey sports exhaust to 2.5" turn-down tip.

or should i change pipe to 2"?

I think you should go to Kermit Engineering and win at owning a Skyline.

Then come to my shop and drop some cash on some Volk TE37Vs. :D

Haha, I think Kermit is a bit out of his price range.

Superchargers are no where near as bad as you make them out to be, Martin. Yes, they cost power to make power, but if they use 10% power to make 50%, then you're 40% up! Its as easy as that. Plus there's no such thing as lag. Take it from someone with a laggy turbo, lag SUCKS! Supercharges definately have they're merrits. :)

I've been in a supercharged car. It feels exactly the same as a naturally aspirated car. Fast yes, makes good power yes, but still lame and boring.

I actually enjoy lag. Feeling how slow the car is with low compression ratio, getting excited when you hear and start to feel boost coming on, and then BAM! Getting thrown back in your seat and not having any choice but to hold tight to the steering wheel

Personal opinion though. I do love my turbos, obviously. I've owned 2 turbo cars and wouldn't go back. However, the way a V8 or supercharged car makes power is amazing! It's just there, all the time! Which is great in a racing situation where you need the response to shoot out of a corner quickly :)

But if you come out of the corner with enough revs on boost.... ;)

In a racing situation for sure, i'd love to have a twin supercharged VH45 booting around. But for everyday street driving, needs to be a turbo. Nothing else gives you that thrill. Or you can choose to drive off boost if you just wanna take it easy or save fuel. Dont have that choice with a supercharger

Guys, This is what I'm contemplating:
$1120

Buy extractors from mettam's in balcatta = $440
grapnel in balcatta to install extactors,2.25" piping, resonator, lukey sports exhaust, 2.5" turndown tip. = $680

worth it?

if not, design your own
existing manifold (free) vs extractors ($660 installed)

i don't know what to do people

Ok dude, you need extractors, that's a given. Not only are they one of the best performance modifications you can do to an NA car, they sound bloody awesome. So extractors are a must. Then i think 2" to the cat is probably big enough, but i'm not 100% on that, somebody else on here could probably clarify. Then 2.5" cat-back is the best size for an NA, without losing back-pressure but maintaining good flow and great sound.

So whatever it costs for extractors (check out Coby and DKNE, they both make top of the line extractors although i would have no idea if they make them for your car) + 2" pipe to the cat + 2.5" from the cat back. That's my recommendation :)

thanks for reply, there's no cat as its pre australian unleaded car, just mid resonator and rear muffler.

numbers 1 and 2 aren't valid anymore.

The one up above for $1120 has replaced number 1

Revised options are as follows:

1: Extractors,2.25" piping, resonator, lukey sports exhaust, 2.5" turndown tip. = $1120

2. Extractors ($660 installed), existing 1.75" piping, new resonator, muffler(~$250) + 2.5" turndown tip (~$40). = ~$950

3. Existing manifold, existing 1.75" piping, new resonator, muffler(~$250) + 2.5" turndown tip (~$40)= ~$290

That's my options.

I want number 1, but don't want to spend that much so I'm fine with number 2, BUT will it bottleneck at the entrance to 1.75" piping?

Nah, should be fine. Give you a bit more power, then replace the extractors later on. Although, you have that manifold leak, so changing that should be your first priority.
