The tyre thread! As the name suggests this is a thread all about those sticky (or slippery) bits of rubber which keep our cars on the road.

What are you running? Are they any good? What have you used before? Where did you get them? How much did they cost?

This is an important subject that everyone should know a bit about, so post away!

Hey all!

I thought I would share my experiences with ordering my tyres from the USA. As you can get them a shit load cheaper!
BEWARE LONG POST!!! :)

Early February I ordered 4x Dunlop Direzza Z1 star specs (255/40/R17) thru tirerack.com. Awesome looking tyres and had some good reviews.
Tirerack.com were very helpful and the order process went very smoothly. You can only wire transfer money to them, no use of paypal or credit card. Because of this your bank will slug you a international transfer fee. Mine being $22. Tirerack provide you with all the neccessary details to complete the transaction. within 2-3 days of me sending the money my tyres were on the way. I was provided with a tracking number (2 in fact as the tyres where sent in pairs) so i could follow the tyres all the way to my door step. They were shipped by FedEX. I was told approx 5-7 days. Awesome, I couldnt wait!

This is where the fun started...

7 days past, 1 day after the scheduled arrival of the tyres, and I hadnt received anything. According the the tracking numbers one was in perth facility and the other had left the US but had not been scanned since...so i rang up FedEX to find out what the story was.... well they couldnt find the second shipment anywhere... they searched for 5 days.(by this time i thought someone has now got some nice new 'free' tyres on their car) and at this point they said they will order a replacement for me. This was 3 weeks after my original order. I must say FedEX were very helpful and called me back regularly to update me on the status. They also dealt directly with tirerack to order the replacement. all i had to do was wait...
The replacement was sent and was scheduled to arrive 7 days later. They then released the first shipment from customs in perth (it was sitting there for 2 weeks waiting for the 2nd 'lost' shipment.)

Now this is where it gets even funnier..

2 days after the replacement was sent.. the original shipment turned up in perth. So 4 tyres arrived at my door step :) with another 2 'replacements' scheduled to arrive 4 days later!! Which they did... so now I have 6 tyres! What didnt make sence is that FedEX rang me after the 4 tyres arrived and said they found it and asked if i received them all, and that the replacements were never sent...This to me was all a major screw up from FedEX, and the left hand didnt know what the right hand was doing... as i knew that the replacements where on the way because tirerack had provided me with a tracking number.

I just received an email from tirerack asking if i received all 6, and they want to make a deal regarding the additional 2... with which i am still deciding what to do. :) basically its 50% off the tyres, no shipping charges..

So in the end, it has worked out all ok, well with me being better off at least! 6 tyres for the price of 4!!! Being my first experience it wasnt the most pleasant. I think i was just unlucky, and if I ever needed new tyres i would not hesitate to use tirerack.com again.

I will be getting them fitted next week hopefully and will update you all then on how awesome they really are. :)
Cheers

Glad you ended up going with my suggestion of the Z1 Star Specs Gavin, I really do think that you're going to find them a great tyre to drive on in the GT-R. Not to mention the picture of them looks great!

It certainly sounded like it was Fed-Ex who made all the stuff ups and TireRack sounds like they did the right thing by you with replacement tyres and the like, I'm glad it all worked out :)

Speaking of TireRack I just put another friend onto them. He has a Volkswagen Golf R32 running 225/40R18s. He was quoted ~$550ish each for Continental Conti Sport Contact 5's with nil stock here in Australia. Shipped to him directly via Fed-Ex? $300-$320ea!

here are a few pics of them fitted... so far they seem great! alot stickier then my previous tyres. I am experiencing a bit of road noise, but not sure if thats going to disappear once they wear in a bit.
