When I did my senior 1AC we were told the first thing to do to an unconscious person was to place them in the recovery position, which is close to what this guy did. It's all part of the DRABC routine, and this guy obviously had a clue.
When people who are unconscious are in a supine position, they have a chance to choke on their own tongue due to a loss of muscle control which causes the tongue to fall to the back of the pharynx, creating an obstruction. This is referred to as a mechanical obstruction.
A fluid obstruction is caused through vomit or any of the stomach's content caused by passive regurgitation entering the lungs causing aspiration pneumonia.
Ask Paul if in doubt. I wrote Vinidex's Cert 1-4 which included a fully detailed first aid unit that was verified by SJA.
Nakkers is spot on the money. You CAN choke on your own tongue.
